Malaika celebrating its tenth anniversary
19.05.2017, Lubumbashi, DRC – TMB is proud to have been supporting and sponsoring Malaika for many years. The organisation celebrated its tenth anniversary with a fundraising evening held on 17 May in New York.
Malaika means “angel” in Swahili. The mission of Malaika (formally known as the Georges Malaika Foundation) is to empower Congolese girls and their communities through education. Based in New York, the non-profit operates in Kalebuka, in the Southeastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The Foundation offers free high-quality education, including sports, to 252 girls. Malaika’s challenge, starting with these local activities, is to give the members of the communities the opportunity to take control of their environment by becoming actors of change.
Banking on the education of girls is also banking on the future of their community. In fact, every year a girl spends at school gives her the chance to improve her future income by approximately 10% to 20%. That income will then be directly reinvested in the local economy; it will consolidate the economy and enrich it.
For several years now, TMB has had the privilege of sponsoring six participating students of the Malaika Foundation programme namely Gabriella, Jeanne, Niclette, Maguy, Lisette and Louise.
In the context of the celebration of Malaika’s tenth anniversary, TMB has contributed to the travel expenses of three girls, enabling them to travel to New York to participate in this great event.
Louise, Mamie and Lauriane flew from Lubumbashi to New York on Friday 12 May. They will be returning to the DRC on 24 May, after a wonderful ten-day trip in which they will discover New York and participate in the ceremony.
